WORKSHOP ON SELF PROTECT APP

Meherpur, Apr 9 (UNB) – A security mobile app, Self Protect developed by a local young man has been launched here. Deputy commissioner Parimal Singh opened the app at his office on Sunday. Police super Ansiur Rahman, app developer Saddam Hossien and coordinator of the app project Mamun Or Rashid were also present.

Self Protect app launched in Meherpur A mobile based public safety app was launched at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Meherpur on Sunday. Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Meherpur Parimal Singha inaugurated the mobile app. Meherpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Anisur Rahman, Additional SP (circle) Mostafizur Rahman, UNO of Gangni Upazila Bishnupada Pal, and UNO of Mujibnagar Upazila Nahida Akter were present, among others. The app, called ‘Self Protect,’ was developed by Saddam Hossain of Meherpur. DC Parimal said: “This app will play an important role in public safety. We will conduct campaigns on its usability and advantage to schools and colleges.”

Companion self protect in danger

Saddam Hossain, a student of Daffodil University, has developed the “Self Protect” app to notify law enforcement agencies about safety concerns, emergency assistance needs, and crime prevention incidents. The app works even without an internet connection. It can also help locate a lost phone.

It was in March 2012. Saddam Hossain was returning to his hometown Meherpur by train from Dhaka. By the time the train reached Chuadanga Railway Station, it was already evening. As he walked a little ahead to catch a bus from the station, a group of seven to eight muggers caught him. They took everything—his mobile phone and wallet.

The app Self Protect is designed to support user to connect with friends and family as well as law enforcement agencies to tackle emergency situation. Md Saddam Hossien , a senior of Computer Science and Engineering(CSE) Department of Daffodil International University, has developed the mobile software which enabled with Global Positioning System (GPS). Hossien shared about the words behind the development of the software while made a chat with the correspondent recently. Hossien said that the idea of developing such a emergency supportive software while he lost his mobile phone and cash becoming a victim of road-side hijacking. I started the development part of the apps in 2014 after getting training and mentorship from ICT division. I shared my idea with the mentors and they supported me on development of the application, Hossien said.

The app sends distress message with ones current location to nearest police station and at maximum two chosen contacts once the power button is pressed thrice. The app is based on the GPS in Smartphone and it lets one notify his/her emergency contacts with the current location within seconds a critical operation that becomes difficult or even impossible in case of emergency. Besides, the locations of police stations, hospitals, fire stations, ambulances and blood banks along with their phone numbers could be collected through the app. Speaking on the occasion, the DC said the app will play an important role in ensuing public security.  Hailing Saddam Hossien for developing the app, the police super said police will take prompt action soon after receiving message from any user.
